This Balang Unisex Windbreaker by Koori Threads, celebrates, our Aboriginal Culture & the story of Uncle Balang Lewis, and what his strength meant to me as an artist!
Every line in this story is to acknowledge the beautiful memories that we have been gifted by a great warrior, a man who fought long and hard to change the way mob were treated, by systems not designed for them.
Never giving up hope, Uncle Balang Lewis showed us, that if you want it and it doesn't happen, to keep chasing it, keep hunting, the rewards will be great!
The Balang Collection is in honor of all the work done by Uncle Balang Lewis, a great warrior, with a modern tongue and old ways,
Throughout years of challenges, Balang found a way to make a difference, and his heart was as strong as his voice. I would also like to pay my respects to all of Uncle's families and hope that this story does Uncle's work proud.
It has been said that those who knew Uncle Balang best say he wanted to "raise Indigenous stories from the dust, so everyone can better understand Indigenous culture, and as an artist, this is my way of honoring Uncle Balangs lifelong achievements in. making a difference and making sure mobs' voices could be heard everywhere.
I can only dream now of how Balangs gift sticks with me as an artist, and this is my interpretation of Uncle's legacy that he shared with the world.
On one side of the story each line represents the many challenges I have faced as an artist! Not knowing where to start, but I knew I had to start, to carry our stories across the waters so the world could hear. Telling stories of history, of colinisation, of disability, of justice, of failure, of strength.
As my voice goes silent, I must learn to be louder & use my art now to tell those stories, throrugh my eyes
On the opposite side you will see the challenges that Uncle Balang likely faced along the way within his own journey, at times circling around, coming back to the start, but never giving up, taking on media in a time where it was hard enough being recognised as a proud black fulla, but it was also an industry that had excluded our mob for so long and still do, with the continual misrepresentation of our people, of our culture, and of our Beautiful families.
